Tips for Insomniacs

Insomnia is a common health problem that has been linked to causing many side effects such as irritability, difficulty with concentration, weight gain, and a weakened immune system. Luckily, insomnia may be treated by a variety of methods. These methods include prescription medications, natural sleep aids, and forming healthy habits. The best sleep aid is combining natural sleep aids with healthy habits, like eliminating caffeine consumption in the afternoon and going to sleep at the same time every night.

Here are some things you can do to help yourself fall asleep:

  1. Eliminate caffeine from your diet, especially during afternoon hours.
  2. Choose a specific time to go to bed and to wake up.
  3. Exercise more often. This increases your level of activity which in turn tires the body and helps you fall asleep faster.
  4. Ask your physician and/or physical therapist about (e.g. what position, types of pillows, use of hand splints, etc.)
  5. Avoid naps during the daytime as this will usually take away from your nighttime sleep.
  6. Avoid alcohol to help you feel drowsy.
  7. Get into a relaxed state 30-60 minutes before bed, every night.
  8. Do not sleep in, even if you did not sleep well enough. Sleeping in will make it harder to fall asleep the next time. Waking up at the same time is a habit you must form.
  9. Try meditation to get you into a relaxed state.
